Paterson drops out as New York’s political nightmare goes on

The New York losing streak continues. Democratic Gov. David Paterson announced Friday he wouldn’t run for election this fall, two years after he replaced disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer after his involvement in a prostitution scandal.
His decision came barely a week after he had kicked his campaign off.
His downfall is just another reminder for all Americans about how politicians are not above the law. And how their actions and any appearances of impropriety will be judged by an increasingly skeptical public.
The most damning trouble for Paterson included allegations that he reportedly personally intervened in a domestic violence episode involving a top aide.
Paterson said Friday:
“I have never abused my office — not now, not ever…. There are times not to strive for service but to step back. That moment has come for me.”
