Gov. David Paterson made the right decision to end his campaign for a full term as governor, local politicians and business leaders said Friday.
“I think it’s best for the party if Mr. Paterson – Gov. Paterson – steps aside (from the governor’s race) due to the controversies that have developed over the past several weeks,” said Warren County Treasurer Francis O’Keefe, a Democrat.
Paterson became governor in 2008 after former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal.
Now Paterson himself is caught up in controversy over a top aide who stands accused of domestic violence and allegations the State Police may have pressured the aide’s former girlfriend not to press charges.
