Say this for New York Gov.-For-Now David Paterson: He can take a hint. Provided that hint is delivered over and over again by public opinion polls, political colleagues and high-ranking members of his own party.
The door to the governor’s mansion was opened for Paterson by scandal. It has likewise been closed, in part, by scandal. And of that door, many New Yorkers are thinking, “don’t let it hit you on the way out, Dave.”
The poor governor has had a difficult two years in office.
His political fortunes rose when his predecessor’s trousers fell. Former Gov. Eliot “Leave off the last ‘T’ for Tawdry” Spitzer resigned in disgrace in March 2008 amid a prostitution scandal. (And check out this career arc: The woman involved is now a newspaper columnist.)
