Gov. david paterson’s decision to abandon his election campaign comes as a relief to the vast majority of New Yorkers, who believe that he has failed at leading the state in almost every possible way. An unfortunate consequence of his tenure may be that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo could waltz into the governor’s mansion next year having made no clear commitments on the important issues facing the statea
potential repeat of the disastrous Spitzer era.
Here’s the history lesson we should not forget: Eliot Spitzer may have lost the governorship and his reputation as a result of his visits with prostitutes, but he lost his effectiveness as a leaderlong before he actually left powerbecause of his commanding victories in the primary and the general election.
