Last Sunday, David Paterson announced his intention to run for a full, four-year term as governor of New York. He told crowds in appearances across the state that he would not allow rumors about his personal life keep him from seeking the office he inherited when Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in 2008 after becoming entangled in a sex scandal involving prostitutes.
Tempus fugits quickly sometimes in politics. A week after his entry into the race, Paterson was being urged by fellow Democrats to drop out because of concerns involving the personal life of one of his top aides. The concerns are legitimate and, unlike rumors or disenchantment with his performance in office, were enough to end Paterson’s hopes of achieving by voter choice what he gained by accident. He ended his campaign Friday.
