Manhattan Adult Entertainment: NYC takes unusual approach vs graffiti

New York City has taken an unusual approach in its fight against graffiti. It temporarily closed a Harlem hardware store accused of selling spray paint to minors.
The Wall Street Journal ( http://on.wsj.com/JR7XzH) says authorities targeted Apartment Depot Hardware in a sting operation after several graffiti suspects said they had bought spray paint there.
The store’s attorney, Enrique Leal, calls the tactics that resulted in the six-day closure “outrageous.”
Store owner Jose Tejada says his son was minding the shop and didn’t know about the law. He said if police had just issued him a summons, he would have addressed the issue.
The city’s nuisance-abatement law is normally used to shut down establishments suspected of drug activity, gambling or prostitution.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Nuns, bishops, and ‘King Lear’

There is no question who the general public supports in this debate. There have been six or seven articles in the New York Times alone, defending the nuns. Nicolas Kristof, an NYT columnist, wrote: “If people were asked who has more closely emulated Jesus’ life, the average sister or the pope, the nuns would win hands down.”  It’s not exactly the point at issue—the Pope might agree with the statement—but it indicates how much people admire the nuns for their lives of service and how poorly they regard the bishops and their claims of authority.
There are articles in newspapers telling of the nuns’ work in New York City with the poorest and most endangered women—those who have been trafficked, drug addicts trying to recover, recently released from prison, beaten by their husbands, pregnant without family support, homeless, or prostitutes trying to start a new life.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: New releases

… ★ ★ Dark Shadows Tim Burton has got his groove back. This big-screen revamp of the much-loved (if ridiculous) late-’60s Gothic soap opera is both sendup and homage, and it recaptures the show’s doomy vibe with blissful comic precision. Johnny Depp is great fun as Barnabas Collins, an 18th-century vampire having trouble adjusting to the polyester 1970s. With Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green. (113 min., PG-13) (Ty Burr)
Elles Juliette Binoche plays a bourgeois Paris housewife and freelance journalist researching an article on two university students (Anais Demoustier and Joanna Kulig) who moonlight as prostitutes. The film’s a passive-aggressive tract that’s buoyed by superior performances and sunk by its own uncertainties. An alternate title might be “The Joylessness of Sex.” In French, with English subtitles. (99 min., NC-17) (Ty Burr)

Manhattan Strip Clubs: Explicit and harrowing handshakes with death

BY JERRY TALLMER  |  Most plays in the English language have a certain formal structure. There are so many characters — anywhere from just one to, oh maybe 30 or 40. Each character has a name or a descriptive tag or both (Editor Webb — Candida, the minister’s wife — Young Abe Lincoln), and the words or thoughts or both are ascribed to one or another of these characters or, as it may be, more than one.
Not in the case of Mark Ravenhill. Or at least not in the case of 46-year-old British playwright Mark Ravenhill’s passionate yet cynical “pool (no water),” which — lower case and all, but with five life-sized, flesh-and-blood actors articulating now this person, now that one, as if by roll of the dice (ah there, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern!) — is receiving its New York premiere.
One might think that this strip tease, bare-bones aspect of a play gunning for public consumption might be for shock effect, and one might be right. The last time we had something of Ravenhill’s in these parts was 12 years ago at East 4th Street’s New York Theatre Workshop, and the work being shopped bore the in-your-face title, “Shopping and Fucking.”

Manhattan Strip Clubs: INTERVIEW: Ashley Spencer Is Ready to Rock of Ages

Now, Spencer is taking on the role of small-town girl Sherrie in the hit Broadway musical, Rock of Ages, at the Helen Hayes Theatre. TheaterMania recently chatted with Spencer about the show, learning how to work the stripper pole, and celebrating the Tony Award nomination of her fiancé, Newsies star Jeremy Jordan.

AS: First, her relationship with Drew is so touch and go. There is so much miscommunication between them. I think when they miss each other, they are finding themselves. Drew wants to be a big rock star, and Sherrie wants to be an actress, but becomes a stripper. Ultimately, she learns how to take care of herself and how to be independent, which she already is in a way, from the beginning. She has to become a bad girl to find out who she really is. And then she ends up with Drew at the end.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Ex-Giant Taylor auctioning off Super Bowl ring

The release comes the morning after Giants players received their Super Bowl XLVI championship rings at a ceremony at Tiffany & Co.
Taylor’s ring is described as showing “considerable wear, that in some eyes, only enhances its aura.”
The ring features two football-shaped diamonds on a background of blue enamel and surrounded by 17 smaller diamonds. On one side of the ring, “TAYLOR” is engraved above a Giants helmet with the number “56″ underneath it.
The ring also comes with a notarized letter of authenticity from Taylor, whose name also is engraved on the interior band.
Taylor was sentenced in March 2011 to six years’ probation in a deal where he agreed to plead guilty to sexual misconduct and patronizing an underage prostitute. Taylor initially was charged with third-degree rape, among other counts, stemming from an incident that occurred in May 2010.

Manhattan Escorts: Accused NYC madam makes legal switch _ her 3rd

NEW YORK The accused suburban-mom madam of a multimillion-dollar Manhattan escort service has moved on to a new legal team her fourth.
A judge agreed Tuesday to let Anna Gristina make her third legal switch. She’s now represented by seasoned Connecticut civil rights and criminal defense lawyer Norman Pattis.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office says Gristina peddled prostitutes for 15 years and bragged that she had law-enforcement contacts. Gristina’s lawyers have said she was merely starting a matchmaking business.
She’s pleaded not guilty to promoting prostitution.
Altogether, nine lawyers have appeared on her case at various times. One former Gristina attorney, Peter Gleason, offered to put up his apartment for her $2 million bail.
The judge urged other arrangements. Gristina has yet to raise bail.

Manhattan Escorts: Self-proclaimed ‘King of All Pimps’ sentenced to four years in prison

… In Nevada, the saying is, ‘If it doesn’t scare the horses, who cares?’” he told Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Farber before being led away in his handcuffs and black velvet jacket.
“I predict here and now that eight years from now, in the year 2020, New York and other enlightened states will decriminalize the world’s oldest profession, namely prostitution,” he said, ending his statement with, “And I’d like to give a shout-out to Billy Ray Cyrus!”
The perennially stoned Itzler, 44, had mistakenly believed that the alleged john in the case — a Pennsylvania man who paid Itzler $19,500 for a cocaine and hooker binge at the Trump International Hotel last year — was country singer Billy Ray Cyrus using an alias.
This is Itzler’s second escort service conviction; in 2007 he pleaded guilty to running New York Confidential, an escort service prosecutors say earned $1.2 million.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: NAACP, 1199 SEIU, National Action Network To Lead Silent March Down Fifth Ave …

… The Jewish tradition teaches of the rodef, the pursuer, and teaches that one must intervene if they witness inequality, ‘lo tamod al dam reaha.’ You are instructed to pursue justice and peace,” said Louis Cholden-Brown of the Jewish Theological Seminary. “I am here today to say in a loud and clear voice: Stop and frisk does not stop crime, stop and frisk is a crime!”
“As Transgender women we are constantly stopped and frisked just because of they way we express our gender identity, and because they presume we are engaging in sex work, when often times we are just going to the corner store to buy milk or something for the house,” said Jessica Guaman from the LGBTQ Justice Project of Make the Road NY. “And if they find condoms in our bags, this is automatically considered proof of prostitution. These practices hurt our communities, and our trust with the police. They have to stop”
