At trial, witness after witness testified about Campbell’s reign of terror.
But the trial came to an abrupt halt when Ukrainian immigrant Liudmyla “Liuda” Ksenych told prosecutors that she recognized defense attorney Rathe as a client from the massage parlor where she worked for Campbell.
U.S. District Court Judge Robert Gettleman declared a mistrial.
In the meantime, in a hearing that had to give new meaning to the words “awkward” and “uncomfortable,” Rathe testified about how he was indeed a massage client of “Liuda,” and had given her gifts and exchanged e-mails with her—but that there was no sex involved.
Campbell is set for a new trial in January, and with a new defense attorney—one who hasn’t frequented his massage parlors.

Feds Get 17th Conviction in Koreatown Sex Trafficking Case

MANHATTAN FEDERAL COURT — The 17th and last member of an international sex trafficking ring that operated out of massage parlors in Midtown’s Koreatown was convicted by a Manhattan jury on Monday, federal prosecutors said.
Min Su Cho, was considered a “broker” in the operation that provided women from New Jersey, California and Korea to brothels in Koreatown. After a week-long jury trial in Manhattan Federal Court, she was convicted of conspiring to transport prostitutes over state lines, prosecutors said.
“The conviction of Min Su Cho closes a chapter in the prosecution of those responsible for a vast, international sex trafficking ring that exploited countless women,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

According to the superseding indictment and the evidence presented at trial:
A network of brothels in the Koreatown section of Manhattan masqueraded as massage parlors and used various brokers and taxi drivers to provide a steady supply of women to engage in prostitution. CHO was a broker who supplied prostitutes from New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Korea to these brothels, which were operated by other defendants in the case. Brokers like CHO received anywhere from $200 to $500 each from both the brothel owners and the prostitutes for facilitating connections between them.

In 2008, Corey Davis, whose mother served as commissioner of human services in Babylon, N.Y., was sentenced to 24 years and five months in prison for operating a ring in which girls between ages 12 and 19 were sent to work in strip bars — including Pleasant Moments Cafe and Bishops Corner Cafe in Bridgeport and the Track in Queens, N.Y. — and then once their dancing shifts ended, they walked the streets until 5 a.m. earning as much as $5,000 a night.
Most of the money went to Davis who owned a house in Queens, drove a luxurious Mercedes Benz and wore a $91,000 watch.
That same year, Aleksander Dubogryzov, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was sentenced to five years and seven months in federal prison and ordered to forfeit nearly $300,000 for a prostitution operation using Eastern European women. Sex was sold in health spas, massage parlors and holistic healing centers in Stratford, Stamford and Norwalk as well as New York and Jersey.

… Ridgewood police and members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office this month busted a massage parlor sev­eral blocks off Route 17 on North Maple Avenue. The team carried out the arrest of a woman allegedly solicit­ing prostitution to an undercover offi­cer.
“My concern when dealing with po­tential prostitution operations is the clientele they may bring into the area,” Ridgewood Police Chief John M. Ward said.
“They can bring collateral damage to the neighborhood,” such as perverse behavior, drugs and weapons, he said.

“We’re talking about two types of services that are offered,” Gurney said of what police must monitor. “The massage parlors and then there’s the use of the Internet dating/escort type of services where people meet up in local hotels.”

Mahwah ordinances prohibit massage parlors, so arrests by police are generated out of the hotels in the township, Batelli said.

According to the signs posted at 168 Bloomfield Ave., Spa 168 and a chiropractor’s office occupied the second floor of the Newark building.
However, people who live and work in the area said the second floor was lit up at all hours. Somehow, they don’t think any chiropractor works at 5 a.m. Someone also told me “scantily clad” women sometimes congregated on the sidewalk, waiting to be buzzed in, to go to work.

In July DeMaio promised a crackdown on prostitution in the city. Yet no written policy? And how could a massage parlor open up again, in the same location, after being shut down?

The League of Women Voters of Mountain Lakes (LWVML) invites all to a presentation of “Human Trafficking: In Our Own Jersey Backyard” on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 9:30 a.m., 65 Melrose Rd.
At a U.N. meeting, Elizabeth Santeramo heard a survivor share her story of being trafficked as a sex slave in California at the age of 16.
Santeramo was inspired to organize a panel in Montclair, co-sponsored with Delta Sigma Pi at Montclair State University. The goal is to teach people to protect themselves from being abducted on campus, recognize and anonymously report massage parlors that function as sex spas, work with and train local law officials on how to identify and help victims and to become more aware so that everyone can make a difference and even save someone.

Possible Massage Parlor in New Providence Stirs Controversy
 
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The controversy is continuing to grow around a proposed spa that has local officials skeptical as to the nature of the business.
 
The planning board met Tuesday night to discuss the proposal to turn the former McGrath’s Hardware site into several separate shops. At the planning board’s request, each of the business owners presented details about their stores.
