… We couldn’t get anyone in England to talk about sex addiction.” The unspoken deserves a film, and in Shame, Steve Mcqueen directs a worthy addition to the ever-fascinating addiction genre.
Hollywood portrays sex as romantic or erotic. However, making sex unsexy is what Shame does from the outset; Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is seen with a prostitute, followed by a scene of him visibly urinating, followed by a lonesome shower scene. And the film wears no lingerie, with full frontal nudity from Fassbender as he walks past the camera. There is also a lack of Friends With Benefits style cheekiness – the insatiable thirst for sexual satisfaction is not funny, it’s a problem. Rather than a rollercoaster of joyful New York escapades, there is an animalistic expression on Brandon’s face when he catches sight of an attractive woman and upon successful conquest he seems to be relieved and pacified rather than happy.

… I think it all feels like a bit of an accident, really,” she tells Postmedia News during a weekend of interviews on behalf of War Horse, a movie in which she definitely keeps her clothes on, and which takes her into the distinctly unfamiliar territory of the family movie. “I’ve fallen into situations which have required guts of me, and I’ve just gone, ‘OK, I’ll be gutsy. I’ll go for it, because I don’t know what else to do.’ I’d like to say I have a great master plan of courage, but I don’t. I’m sort of following my nose through a maze, really.”
She seems so matter-of-fact this afternoon that you need to remind yourself of her readiness to embrace the weird, kinky and downright pathological on screen. Helena Bonham Carter turned down Breaking the Waves and the role of a sexually repressed wife who turns to prostitution, but Watson, then 28 and hungering for a screen career, jumped into the breach with a performance of such scorching intensity that she received an Oscar nomination for this, her very first film.

Minaj also hired 42 West, a public relations company. “She needed a person to concentrate on Nicki Minaj in the press,” Bryant said. One of the first things 42 West did was to contact W, he said, which agreed to put Minaj on the cover of its November art and fashion issue. In the photo, taken by the artist Francesco Vezzoli, Minaj is dressed as the 18th-century French courtesan Comtesse du Barry, in an embroidered Dior couture gown.
“She was taken out of the cliche about rappers, that they are afraid to look like something else,” Tonchi said.
And in September, her appearances at New York Fashion Week were heralded by a fawning press. Bryant said he appointed someone to manage Minaj’s schedule, while her publicists fielded calls from interested hosts. Minaj was a guest of Anna Wintour of Vogue at the Carolina Herrera show. Demsey said he took her to Prabal Gurung. Bryant, too, encouraged her to stop by the Versace store during Fash …

Equally at ease photographing film stars, migrant workers, civil-rights protestors of apartheid in South Africa, disabled Vietnam war veterans and Mongolian herdsmen, Ms Arnold trained her lens on specific projects that often involved months of meticulous preparation. She brought a gift for storytelling and a feminine sensibility to the Magnum ethos. Her portrayals of women are especially perceptive, whether the subject is a melancholy bar girl in a Havana brothel; an ancient Chinese woman peering from a dark doorway or an ageing Joan Crawford as she stares in the mirror. One of her best-known images features Marilyn Monroe on the set of John Huston’s “The Misfits” in 1957, holding her head as she tries to remember her lines. She captures the star’s charm and fragility. As with many of her subjects, Ms Arnold formed a friendship with Monroe that lasted until the star’s death in 1962.

And besides, it’s double the number of Aussies who were getting into trouble overseas a decade ago, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, citing the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade figures.
At any given time, more than 250 Australians are in prisons overseas, according to the department website.
The SMH notes that the number reached record levels in 2010-2011, with 313 in jail.
In the same period, 1,069 Australians were arrested for offenses ranging from attempted murder and assault to kidnapping, theft and tax evasion. In comparison, 568 Australians were arrested in 2001, while 208 were imprisoned.
Assault was the most common crime perpetrated by the Aussie travelers, according to the department’s figures, with drug offenses a close second and boring old visa violations third.
Burglary, corruption, fraud, illegal recruitment, pedophilia, prostitution and sexual assault also made the list.

Director McQueen enhances Brandon’s loneliness by isolating him at the edge of the frame, sometimes in unbroken takes that stretch for minutes. A night time run through the deserted streets of New York is presented as one spectacular tracking shot, hammering home Brandon’s solitude. As tensions run high with Sissy, who’s crashing at his apartment, he even remarks that he feels boxed into a corner by her very presence.
Her arrival brings Brandon’s own life into sharp focus, and he makes an effort to change his ways. His pornography stash is thrown out, and he tries to cool it on the call girls and masturbating in bathroom cubicles. He even attempts to make a ‘real’ relationship work, sharing an awkward date with secretary Marianne (Nicole Beharie). When it comes to the crunch, though, Brandon can’t make it work and slips back into addiction.

Appeals Court Nixes New York Lawyer’s Porn Payday
Jan 09th, 2012 03:36 PM
NEW YORK—Is there something in the New York water that brings out the porn defense in lawyers? In 2010, we wrote about the 79-year-old retired Brooklyn attorney who tried (and failed) twice to get the IRS to approve hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax deductions, including money he spent on pornography, prostitutes and massages. Now, another New York lawyer has hit a brick wall with his attempt to get his former law firm (from which he was fired) to pay a $600,000 discrimination judgment, arguing that his mental disorder caused him to spend the firm’s money on porn, escorts and other alleged self-medication.
Following his termination from Hill Betts & Nash, attorney James Hazen filed a discrimination claim with the New York State Division of Human Rights, claiming he suffered from a bipolar disorder. According to Reuters, an administrative law judge awarded Hazen $50,000 and “a subsequent order from the departmental commissioner granted Hazen an additional $550,000 in lost pay.”
