Manhattan Strip Clubs: Time’s Square Ball Drop: How Did this New Year’s Eve Tradition Begin?

As for the appeal of a giant, glowing ball covered in Swarovski crystals slowly sliding down a giant pole in the middle of what used to be the strip club capital of the United States . . . uh, yeah, hmm. How exactly did that happen? Good thing Rudolph Giuliani replaced the dirty book stores with that giant Toys R Us. *ahem* But it’s an easy visual symbol to mark the last few seconds of the old year, and you don’t even have to be old enough to read to shout along with everyone on TV as the big ball comes down. It makes the whole night official, as you can hear entire neighborhoods erupting in “Happy New Year!” simultaneously, letting us all share the moment, time zone by time zone, thanks to Dick’s Giant Ball.

HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a New Jersey woman allegedly forced into prostitution by a stranger who bailed her out of jail was rescued after she sent a message to her brother in Florida via Facebook.
Hackensack police tell The Record that 29-year-old Trenace McCarroll faces numerous charges, including criminal restraint and promoting prostitution.
Police say the 30-year-old south Jersey woman wrote in the message that she was being held against her will. Her brother called authorities in south Jersey, who notified Hackensack police.
Officers then went to an apartment where they believed she was being held and found McCarroll’s girlfriend there, along with illegal drugs.
They then contacted McCarroll, who said the drugs were his. He then came to police headquarters with the victim, unaware that authorities were looking for her.

A woman who was allegedly forced into prostitution was rescued after she managed to send her brother a Facebook message

He then came to police headquarters with the victim, unaware that authorities were looking for her, Barrios said. McCarroll was arrested and faces numerous charges, including criminal restraint, promoting prostitution, drug charges and human trafficking charges.
The woman told police that she was jailed in South Jersey for allegedly stealing a car, Berrios said.  Another female inmate said her ex-boyfriend could bail her out of jail, Berrios said. Police said McCarroll bailed her out and told her she needed to pay off the debt by working as prostitute
The woman told police that she carried out several acts of prostitution throughout Bergen County under threat to her life, Berrios said.

NJ Woman Saved From Forced Prostitution After Sending Brother Facebook Message

Apparently the victim had been in a South Jersey jail “for allegedly taking a car without the owner’s permission.” An inmate said her ex-boyfriend could bail her out, but when Trenace McCarroll did bail her out, he told the 30-year-old woman that she’d have to pay him back. According to the Record, “The victim told officers she was held against her will, under threat to her life, and was forced to perform several acts of prostitution throughout Bergen County for a week and a half.”
After receiving the call from the victim’s brother, the Little Egg Harbor authorities told Hackensack police that the woman was being held against her will. When Hackensack cops arrived at an apartment, they found the victim, plus Trenace McCarroll’s girlfriend and “marijuana and pipes.” McCarroll surrendered, asking that cops not arrest his girlfriend, and was hit with charges including criminal restraint and promoting prostitution.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — A book that accused Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf of visiting strip clubs and media reports claiming the queen was on the verge of a nervous breakdown made 2011 a very tough year, the royal family said in a documentary being shown on national television Thursday.

The book, released late last year, alleged that the king had had a secret love affair in the 1990s and described how he and his friends frequented private nightclubs in Stockholm where they were entertained by scantily clad women. The book, poorly sourced and brushed off by critics as nothing more than a gossip magazine, also claimed the king had visited exclusive strip clubs during some foreign visits.The king has denied visiting those establishments.But the scandal intensified when one of the king’s closest friends, Anders Lettstrom, admitted trying to find out what “The Reluctant Monarch” would say about the royal family before its publication by using underworld contacts to talk with some of the criminals the book was quoting. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess
This legendary folk opera, about the love affair between a disabled beggar and a prostitute in Charleston, S.C., premiered on Broadway in 1935 but has since been confined mainly to opera houses. Now it will return to the Great White Way in a new production by director Diane Paulus and playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, starring Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis. Opens Jan. 12 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
