But it’s also about that central character in the American Dream, the self-made man, in this case, inscrutable Don Draper, creative genius, dishy husband and father and proud, picket-fenced homeowner. Or should that be Dick Whitman, the Second World War deserter, conceived because his cheating father was too mean to spend the extra quarter needed for a condom when he hooked up with a prostitute?
…
Sexual tension fizzes like the Alka-Seltzers every secretary must keep handy and it’s certainly whipped up some heated prose. Take Emily Nussbaum’s recent piece for New York magazine. “I’m still a sucker for the show’s narcotic rhythms – the way it slaps the audience in the face whenever we get comfortable, let alone turned on,” she confides, zeroing in on one of its key preoccupations: “Prostitution is to Mad Men what vampirism is to True Blood – a metaphor that sloshes in everywhere, juicing the most innocent interactions. It blurs the boundaries between every power dynamic: between men and women, secretaries and bosses, clients and ‘creatives’.”

How much reverence will be given to this open space in the city’s maze, which still carries for many the memories of screams and dust and panic? Can it stay sacred?
That question was answered long ago, says a family member.
“The memorial museum is selling souvenirs, for God’s sake,” says Diane Horning, who lost her son, Matthew. “You can’t stand in ground zero without seeing Century 21’s big banners advertising whatever their special is. … This hasn’t been sacred space since the day they put the first rivets in something. It’s office buildings, it’s places to eat, it’s everything but sacred space.”
There’s even a strip club three blocks from the construction site. At New York Dolls Gentlemen’s Club, a woman in a red sequined G-string takes a break from platform dancing and leans over to rub her calves. In the background, Alicia Keys sings on a recording about New York’s concrete jungle.

Posted by: dalls2008 | 09/4/10 | 3:23 pm | Lets see. Yellowpages.com; search escorts & escort services – washington D.C. = 56 listings. Wow, that was hard. So CL gets censored and the rest of the world just keeps on ticking. And this solves ? I’m not sure what europe or most of the states is like, but in Montreal and Toronto we average 3 free weekly new’s papers that do mostly entertainment and alt culture stuff. If not for the all the porn add’s in back they’d all be out of business. In actuality they’re the main people complaining about Craigslist because they’ve lost a ton of dough. Kind of a conflict of interest mais non ? As i recall CL only started charging for adult listings after getting threatened by numerous attorney general’s to do something to prove over 18 status, it wasn’t their idea to make cash off it. What makes the government and politicians think they have a monopoly on screwing us ? And where will they go now to find their hookers and rent boys ?

At first people thought it a trick of the light. But it was a human being, perched on top of the south tower of the World Trade Center in New York at 7.30am. As the figure stepped out into empty space the city held its breath. McCann takes the story of the real-life 1974 incident, in which a man walked a high wire between the Twin Towers, as his starting point for a voyage into a number of interwoven New York stories. There’s a radical Irish monk who lives and works among prostitutes in the Bronx; an Upper East Side matron whose life has been derailed by the death of her son in Vietnam; a drug-addled young artist. Let the Great World Spin has been hailed as one of the greatest New York novels, but it’s really about families, communities and the possibility of beauty in a shoddy society. It would be hard to overstate its power, technical skill and sheer humanity. If you haven’t read it, please do. If you have, read it again. It’s time well spent. Arminta Wallace

Jimmy Fallon: “Fantasy Football is like Dungeons & Dragons for guys who beat up guys who play Dungeons & Dragons.” “There’s been the first gay wedding on an airplane. The crew were excited, but the right wing was against it.” “Some guys were arrested in a store for stuffing video games in their pants. It’s not easy. To do that you have to have a very small Wii.” “A man was robbed of the $29,000 he won at an off-track betting parlor. He said it was tough to win and have nothing to show for it. The horses said, ‘Yeah.’”
Craig Ferguson: “The guy who tried to ruin David Letterman is out of prison. Jay Leno was in prison?” “To be honest I didn’t understand the hurricane report. I was lost in the eyes of Anderson Cooper. I’m not really gay. I just pretend I am to be funny. That’s what I tell the male prostitutes.”

A black line judge confided in me recently that he felt sickened by the way Williams was treated. “It was not that she didn’t deserve to be censured,” he said. “It was really bad. But the umpire made the unusual step of instigating action without any complaint from the line judge. Why do you think that was?”
It might seem like a scant defence – actually, no defence at all – but it does make the point that different rules sometimes apply to different players.
As unedifying as both spectacles were, however, they are of a piece with thousands of similar incidents stretching back to the bad days of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors and, well, pick your villain.
Tennis, supposedly the sporting home of probity alongside golf and cricket, accommodates, for reasons impossible to justify, behaviour that would not look out of place in a brothel. Millionaires screaming at the annoyingly compliant officials has always been the most bizarre spectacle. It is no more than bullying.
