Manhattan Adult Entertainment: AIDS group fears annual HIV costs may hit $35 billion

On the eve of an international conference on AIDS in Vienna, the Alliance said the AIDS virus, which already infects around 33.4 million people across the world, was a “costly time-bomb” for families, governments and donors.
“For every two people who get treatment, five others get infected. At this rate, spending for HIV will rise from $13 billion now to between $19 and $35 billion in just 20 years time,” Alvaro Bermejo, executive director of the Alliance, said in a statement.
International AIDS Alliance brings together AIDS charities and advocacy groups from across the world.
Bermejo said authorities running national AIDS programmes around the world needed to increase HIV prevention by tackling the barriers that stop marginalised groups — such as drugs users, prostitutes and gay men in some countries — from getting HIV treatment and services.

Manhattan Strip Clubs: Orange County firefighter union explains strip-club spending

The president of Orange County’s firefighter union downplayed accusations that inappropriate personal expenses — including a strip-club bar tab — were paid for by the group’s credit card, and ultimately, workers’ dues.
“There’s nothing to it,” said George Romano, president of Local 2057 of the International Association of Firefighters.
The questionable expenses included a $180 bar tab which was later re-paid with personal funds by the handful of union officials who went on an after-hours trip to a strip club, he said. Romano was one of those who attended, but added it was not his credit card that paid the initial bar bill.
Romano said an internal audit has been done and identified better accounting controls that are needed and will be adopted. When the questionable-spending issue was raised at a recent union meeting, less than a dozen members of the 150 or so present called for him to step down, and the rest backed him, Romano said.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Crashing juvie jail’s orgy party

The scathing report from the watchdog state Commission of Correction called for disciplinary action against the Goshen Secure Center’s top administrators and took a major swipe at state Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Commissioner Gladys Carrion, who authorized the “social” as part of a new inmate-friendly policy.
Carrion, who has been defended by Gov. Paterson, revealed in response to the report that she had initiated disciplinary actions aimed at firing five OCFS employees as a result of the incident.
The Post broke the story of the Goshen “social” in May with a detailed report on improper sexual encounters, some caught on video, that occurred between several inmates and a suspected prostitute and an underage girl, both of whom were brought to the locked detention facility at state expense.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: In Attorney General Race, Five Seek to Stand Out

Several candidates said they would seek legislation to expand the attorney general’s criminal jurisdiction over state officials. Senator Schneiderman said he believed that an attorney general could use the office’s existing legal toolbox in imaginative ways to tackle Albany corruption. But as an example, he cited his role leading a special committee that ousted former Senator Hiram Monserrate following Mr. Monserrate’s conviction last year on misdemeanor assault charges — charges that had nothing to do with political corruption.
Each candidate pledged to keep a watchful eye on Wall Street.
They were also asked whether they would have prosecuted former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who resigned two years ago after a prostitution scandal but against whom federal prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges. Ms. Rice said yes; the others said they did not want to second-guess the prosecutors’ decision.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Paterson’s Legal Bills Are Adding Up

In March, Mr. Cuomo named Ms. Kaye an independent counsel; the inquiries under her purview are unrelated. One involves accusations that the Paterson administration and the State Police pressured a former companion of a top aide to withdraw a domestic violence complaint. The other involves an accusation referred by state ethics regulators that the governor perjured himself when he testified this year about his receiving more than $2,000 worth of free Yankees tickets during the World Series in 2009.
Separately, the Paterson administration’s handling of a casino contract at the Aqueduct racetrack in Queens is also being investigated by state and federal authorities.
The three investigations have kept Mr. Paterson’s lawyers busy. He is represented by the Manhattan firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, which also represented his predecessor, Eliot Spitzer, when Governor Spitzer was embroiled in a prostitution scandal.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Paterson Spends $2.5M From Campaign, Including On Lawyers

Paterson Spends $2.5M From Campaign, Including On Lawyers
Now that he’s not running for governor, Gov. David Paterson burned through $2.5 million of the roughly $3 million he had in his campaign coffers in January, his campaign-finance report shows.
Of that, $700,000 went to the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where Paterson has been represented by high-profile attorney Theodore Wells Jr. in the investigations into his administration.
Paterson also doled out $166,000 to the crisis management firm, Sard Verbinnen, who so happens to be the firm Eliot Spitzer turned to during the prostitution scandal that led to his resignation.
Paterson was also paying about $14,000 a month for rent at his Manhattan campaign offices.
Paterson has $615,967 in the bank, and has had a history of spending his campaign cash at a fast rate even when he was running for office.
