The victim was the son of Ben Novack Sr., founder of the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami. The luxurious 1,504-room hotel is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and has been the backdrop for several Hollywood movies and TV shows, most notably the 1964 James Bond film “Goldfinger.”
The Novack family owned the hotel from the time it was built in 1954 until they lost it in bankruptcy in 1977. Despite the loss, Ben Novack Jr. continued on to open a successful convention-management company. (According to the New York Post, he also owned one of the “largest collections of Batman memorabilia in the world.”) At the time of Novack’s death, his estate was worth an estimated $10 million.
While Novack was born into a life of luxury, his wife married into it. A native of Ecuador, she was reportedly working as a stripper when she met Novack. The two hit it off and were wed in 1991.

Wife Charged In Millionaire Husband’s Bizarre Slaying
The Rye Town Hilton in Westchester is a popular local destination for Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations; it was also the site of the grisly murder of Florida multimillionaire businessman Ben Novack Jr last year. Federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment yesterday accusing his wife, former stripper Narcy Veliz Novack, of plotting and aiding in the murder: “She opened the door for the attackers and during the assault, went so far as to provide them with a pillow to place over her husband’s face as he was being beaten to death,” said US Attorney Preet Bharara.
According to police, Novack, whom the Post describes as “still surgically sultry at 53,” had discovered that her husband was cheating on her, and feared he would divorce her. Novack, owner of the country’s second largest collection of Batman collectibles and television show memorabilia (including a real Batmobile), was the son of the founder of Miami’s Fontainebleau hotel, and worth an estimated $10 million at the time of his death; his wife was the sole beneficiary of his will. She allegedly enlisted three men, including her brother, in the murder plot.

Welcomes for Heat’s James, Bosh, Wade pouring in: free pest control> Posted by Sarah Talalay on July 9, 2010 01:57 PM
A New York strip club offered LeBron James a lifetime of free lap dances if he played for the New York Knicks. But Truly Nolen knows while South Florida may offer paradise (and lap dances and no state income tax free), it does have its insects.
That’s why the company is offering five years of free pest control to James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. Because, well, you know, that thing about defense. That’d be free service through July 8, 2015.
“Like these three superstar players, our company believes the best offense is the best defense,” Michelle Senner, Truly Nolen’s director of marketing and philanthropy said in a statement. “Whether LeBron or Chris block shots or Dwyane steals the ball, they remind us of our tenacious technicians.” It was one of the company’s technicians who suggested they offer the service since, well, the players have plenty to pay attention to on the court.

The second story is even more outre than the first one, although perhaps it’s not surprising that a film starring a Goth would be gothic. Like the book on which it’s based, it is violent, complex, barely believable and filled with bizarre characters, like Niedermann (Micke Spreitz), a blond, muscular giant seemingly impervious to pain, and Zala (Georgi Staykov), a shadowy criminal boss with a temperament, not to mention a disfigurement, that wouldn’t be out of place in a Bond villain.
And Sweden is just as fraught. The Girl Who Played with Fire uncovers a prostitution ring that takes advantage of immigrant women and involves a cross-section of the Swedish power elite, all of whom seem to be involved in some way in either kinky sex or its coverup. As in the first movie, the plot has been pared down a bit, and a good thing, too: The book devotes several pages to Lisbeth shopping at Ikea for furniture, for instance, and includes a bizarre episode in which she gets breast implants that make her feel more womanly. For a writer who took up the feminist cause, Larsson could be a little tone-deaf.

Woodbridge man is accused of trying to pay teens to flash him
Published: Friday, July 09, 2010, 1:56 PM Updated: Friday, July 09, 2010, 2:15 PM
WOODBRIDGE — A 27-year-old township man was arrested Thursday night after he tried to pay two teenage girls to expose themselves, authorities said today.
Matthew James Vado, of Colonia, faces charges of child luring and prostitution. He was arrested after he offered to pay $75 each to two teenagers if they lifted their shirts, according to a report filed by officer Michael Agosta.
The officer gave this report: The girls, who live in Iselin and are 14 and 15, were sitting on the corner of Middlesex Avenue and Kennedy Street when Vado pulled up to the curb in his 2009 Infinity G37. Vado, later identified by the victims, asked the two “how much?” Scared, the girls began walking up Kennedy Street toward Carol Place.

Cops: Woodbridge man offered girls money to lift their shirts
BY JOSHUA BURD STAFF WRITER
July 9, 2010
WOODBRIDGE — A Colonia man was arrested late Thursday on charges he drove alongside two teenage girls and offered them money to lift up their shirts, police said.
Matthew Vado, 27, was charged with luring and promoting prostitution.
The victims, 14 and 15, told police they were sitting on the corner of Middlesex Avenue and Kennedy Place around 11 p.m. Thursday when a black sedan pulled up along the curb. The driver allegedly asked them to come closer to the car and then asked how much? — prompting the girls to start walking toward Carol Place.
As they walked up Kennedy Street, the driver followed alongside and repeatedly asked them to come closer to the car, police said. When they refused, he allegedly then said he would pay them $50 each to flash him.

ASB fraudster Stephen Versalko made two lump-sum payments of around $1 million to help an escort leave prostitution and set up her own business outside Auckland.
The bank took legal action against the woman to recoup the $2.55 million given to her by Versalko, who stole $17.8 million during a nine-year fraud.
The court case has since been settled and is the subject of strict confidentiality orders.
But Justice Rhys Harrison this week ruled in the High Court against an application by the Herald on Sunday – owned by Weekend Herald publisher APN Holdings – to overturn name suppression for the former escort.
Justice Harrison said there was no legitimate public interest in disclosing the identity of the woman, and naming her was outweighed by the risk of psychological and emotional harm to her teenage daughter.
…
Versalko spent most of the money on property and high living – including at least $3.4 million on prostitutes.

The film version of the second book, The Girl Who Played with Fire, once again presents a Sweden that’s hard to recognize. The heroes are back — Blomkvist, still played by the appealing Michael Nyqvist, and Salander, again given dark and angry life by the perfectly cast Noomi Rapace and Erika (Lena Endre), the married woman with whom Blomkvist is having a matter-of-fact and fairly public affair (at least some things seem Swedish).
The second story is even more outre than the first one, although perhaps it’s not surprising that a film starring a Goth would be gothic.

A former stripper has been charged with orchestrating the murder of her millionaire husband in a bizarre case involving sex, violence and voodoo.
Narcy Novack claimed she found her husband, Ben Novack Jr, 52, beaten to death in their New York hotel room last July. His face, hands and feet were bound with tape and he had been subjected to a sustained assault.
According to prosecutors, however, Mrs Novack let the killers into the room and handed them a pillow to place over her husband’s face. They allege that the 53 year-old conspired in his murder because she wanted to inherit his $10?million (pounds 6.6?million) fortune. She was charged on Thursday along with three alleged co-conspirators.
The case, with all the elements of a Hollywood thriller, has gripped high society in Miami, Florida.
