Andy Garcia (one of the film’s producers) stars as Vince Rizzo, a prison guard – he prefers the term “correctional officer” – who nurtures secret dreams of being an actor. He locks himself in the family bathroom with a Brando biography instead of a copy of Playboy, and sneaks off at night to acting classes, telling his wife, Joyce, (Julianna Margulies) that he’s headed to a poker game. At his classes, he finds a soul mate (Emily Mortimer), a pretty student with secrets of her own.
The Rizzos’ daughter (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) is a college student whose parents don’t know she earns money as a stripper. The teenage son (Ezra Miller) is a wiseacre with a fetish for fat women. New to the household is a paroled stickup artist (Steven Strait) who moves in to help Vince build a backhouse. Only Vince knows that this frequently shirtless hunk is his son from a pre-Joyce relationship.

Don’t get me wrong. The holier-than-thou, hooker-obsessed former New York governor is a hypocrite of the highest order — almost as bad as a securities firm that takes a bow for its “customers first” credo, and then bets against its customers. Not that it would ever happen, but I’m just saying.
In the disgrace that’s passed for US securities regulation in recent decades, Spitzer, who terrified Wall Street as the New York attorney general who preached morals and lived impiety, has sadly been the best we’ve gotten.
I was reminded of his unmatched ability to force change on Wall Street while reading “Rough Justice,” a just-released biography of Spitzer written by Peter Elkind, a reporter at Fortune magazine. Elkind, who had access to his hormonally cursed subject for the book, offers an account of Spitzer’s journey from a loveless upbringing, to prosecutor, governor, and ultimately customer of Emperors Club VIP, a pricey escort service that furnished him with working girls including “Angelina” and the now-famous “Ashley Alexandra Dupre.”

Actually, it’s not true that nobody knows why Vince brings Tony home. One person knows—Molly (Emily Mortimer), his newly assigned acting-class partner. Their teacher (a sardonic deadpan cameo by Alan Arkin) has assigned the students to share their “biggest secret,” with their partners, and Vince tells Molly about Tony. In return for the confidence, Molly makes it a project to reinforce Vince’s morale, encouraging him to attend a cattle-call audition for a Martin Scorsese movie.
Meanwhile, back at home, Joyce, angry that Tony has been brought into the household without consulting her, takes a cynical view of Vince’s “poker games” every night in the city. She doesn’t buy it; she knows Vince is having an affair. And with revenge on her mind, she takes an appraising look at this dangerous young hunk who’s been thrust under her nose. Wouldn’t that serve Vince right?
Add to these plot threads Vivian’s furtive work at the stripper bar and young Vinnie’s credulity-straining obsession with feeding plus-size women, and we know these family secrets are cruising for a collision, but we don’t know how it’s going to happen. Is somebody going to kill somebody or what?

City Island ***1/2 PG
Either a fantastically self-aware comedy or the worst family drama in a long while; approach it as the former and you should enjoy yourself. Andy Garcia plays Vince Rizzo, a New York City prison guard who secretly wants to act, but won’t tell his wife (Julianna Margulies). Meanwhile, daughter Vivian (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) hides that she’s a stripper, while Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller) hides his fat fetish. Into this mess comes Tony (Steven Strait), whom no one but Vince knows is his son. Need we say that complications and hilarity ensue?

Garcia, who’s more known for intense roles, relished the chance to go for laughs amid some drama as Vince Rizzo, patriarch of a noisily clashing Bronx family, all of whom have secrets.
His daughter’s secret, for example? Her parents think she’s a college student, but she’s really a stripper. And she’s played by Garcia’s real-life daughter, Dominik Garcia-Lorido.
“As a proud father, it’s great to see your children fulfilling your dreams, the fact we’re colleagues and we’re sitting metaphorically and literally across the table from each other.”
Promoting “City Island,” he’s been fielding the inevitable questions about how it feels to have his daughter playing a stripper.
His answer: He wasn’t on set when she was shooting her PG-13 (and clothed) scenes in a strip club – but he has no problem with the role. Or the costumes.

The “Sentiment Rankings” formula ranges from a burning hatred, minus 5, to pure worship, a plus 5.
So why do so many people despise the Indians? They’ve only made the playoffs twice in the last 12 years — their only two winning seasons in that time frame, and they haven’t won a pennant since 1997. It’s not like Cleveland has done much recently to garner such unfavorable feelings from other sports fans.
Not since that stripper took over as owner of the Indians in the late 80s and tried to drive them into the ground have I seen such hatred for such a tough-luck team. It’s a good thing Charlie Sheen and Wesley Snipes turned out to be such stellar athletes or else that whole franchise may have folded by now. Huh? That was only a movie, you say? My bad, disregard that last point.

New York: Craigslist supports human trafficking and child exploitation as part of its charity work. Though the founder of Craigslist declines to interview with a journalist, he wrote on his blog that Craigslist has done the best and most responsible job to combat human trafficking and child exploitation.
Washington D.C.: The police cracks down on Triads, the Chinese organized crime. Among many other illegal activities, Triads has actively involved in human trafficking in Asian countries as well as Canada and the U.S. In Loudon county, the police raided a massage parlor and arrested 9 people with operating a bawdy place. Police charged five customers for frequenting a bawdy place along with one employee for fondling sexual parts of the customers and the other two for practicing without massage permit.

Guess who the stupid party is? For many years I have heard this headline phrase in different incarnations and it has never been truer than it is today. The Democrats are laying down a pair of deuces and telling the Republicans that it is a royal flush. What is so silly is that Republicans fold with a full house after the Democrats play the deuces. John Stuart Mill may have had something.
Watching the farcical debate over Obama’s so called financial reform bill one could be easily misled into believing that Republicans have taken lots of money from corrupt Wall Street bankers and are allowing them to write the reform bill to favor Wall Street. Democrats said as much to Politico on Wednesday.
“‘Bipartisanship for Republican leaders means bringing Wall Street to the table, bring Wall Street banks into the room, and let them help you write the legislation,’ said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio).”
This lunacy is akin to Eliot Spitzer blackmailing a prostitute, or Nancy Pelosi calling someone else a dangerous moron.

… We want to drive day labor away,” says Republican Rep. John Kavanagh, one of the law’s sponsors.
An estimated 100,000 illegal immigrants have left Arizona in the past two years as it cracked down on illegal immigration and its economy was especially hard hit by the Great Recession. A Department of Homeland Security report on illegal immigrants estimates Arizona’s illegal immigrant population peaked in 2008 at 560,000, and a year later dipped to 460,000.
The law’s supporters hope the departure of illegal immigrants will help dismantle part of the underground economy here and create jobs for thousands of legal residents in a state with a 9.6 percent unemployment rate.
Kavanagh says day labor is generally off the books, and that deprives the state of much-needed tax dollars. “We’ll never eliminate it, just like laws against street prostitution,” he says. “But we can greatly reduce the prevalence.”
