Their counsel is, of course, For Entertainment Purposes Only. (Papa’s own advice to singles still searching for their soulmates: “Find someone you can sleep next to without throwing up and marry them.” Wocka wocka wocka.) This is not “Dr. Phil,” nor is it, strictly speaking, a game, but there are winners and losers and prizes for everyone. It’s no accident or surprise that Seinfeld’s fellow executive producers are veterans not of comedy but of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Supernanny” or that the show’s international distribution is being handled by Endemol, home of “Big Brother” and “Deal or No Deal.”
The arguments Sunday were over Husband No. 1’s desire to stuff and prominently display his deceased Boston terrier, and Husband No. 2’s yen to install a stripper pole in the bedroom. Everyone thought the dog was a bad idea, but there was some disagreement over the pole; Kelly Ripa, who joined Seinfeld and Baldwin on Sunday, thought it could be “freaky-deaky,” while Seinfeld, speaking from the soul of a nightclub comic, noted, “It’s still one guy in the dark, clapping.”

NBC worked to harness all of the corporate synergy it could muster to promote its new Jerry Seinfeld comedy-game show, “The Marriage Ref,” teasing it repeatedly during the Olympics and drafting “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin to serve as a celebrity panelist for the premiere episode.
And another NBC personality made a surprise appearance in Sunday’s premiere: “Today” show anchor and correspondent Natalie Morales, who serves as the show’s “Just the Facts Ma’am.” Morales sits behind a laptop on the stage, reporting tidbits about the issue the couples on the show are fighting about. In the behind-the-scenes video above, she discussed with Seinfeld her role as the “straight guy.”
During a segment Sunday about a man who wants to instill a stripper pole in his house for his wife to use, Morales noted that “pole dancing classes have become very popular as exercise.”

The show is one of the highlights of NBC’s hastily revamped lineup after it axed “The Jay Leno Show” in February in an embarrassing retreat from cheap-to-produce talk show fare at 10 p.m., traditionally seen as a time for expensive scripted dramas.
“The Marriage Ref,” which has stars weigh-in on the lighthearted arguments of American couples, drew a strong 14.5 million viewers but some scathing reviews.
The Star Ledger’s Alan Sepinwall called it an “ugly, unfunny, patronizing mess.” Time magazine’s James Poniewozik said it was “the most God-awful mishmash.”
Sunday’s show featured one couple arguing about stuffing their dead dog and another about whether to put a stripper pole in their bedroom. Seinfeld, who has done little TV since his old show ended in 1998, is executive producer and an occasional panelist on “The Marriage Ref”.

Her economic prescription for New York is “P Squared – prostitution and pot.” She says that legalization of both, a combed $15 Billion a year industry annualy in New York alone could help bridge the budget gap by taxation alone. “This black market activity is happening anyway,” said Davis. “Taxing it is just common sense.”
Davis has hired veteran political consultant Roger Stone to manage her campaign.
“I’ve always been a libertarian and I agree with all of the principles that Kristin believes in,” Stone told examiner.com. “She’s got a wide appeal and will garner widespread support.”
But before Davis can run, she’s got to get herself on the ballot and that will take 15,000 valid petition signatures.
Stone told examiner.com that Davis will use her vast network of supporters as well as “prostitutes, strippers, pot smokers and gay rights advocates” to gather at least 45,000 petition signatures, as well as to build a legal team to withstand challenges he expects from both Cuomo and Lazio.

I’m the first to admit that I have a pretty sweet gig. I get to watch TV for a living, and sometimes I even get to mingle with its stars while drinking free beer. But sometimes the job means sitting through horrible television. And last night’s debut of The Marriage Ref may be the worst television I’ve seen in awhile.
Listen, we all knew it was going to be bad. Anyone who saw the promos NBC threw at us during its Winter Olympics coverage and thought, “This is going to be great!” can probably also be entertained for a weekend by a cat toy.
The premise of the show is to have celebrities give marriage advice to couples with issues (in the premiere, these “issues” included a taxidermied pet and a stripper pole in the living room), but in the end, it’s really just celebrities trying to be funny and laughing a little too hard at their jokes. The first episode featured Alec Baldwin and Kelly Ripa sitting alongside mainstay (and show creator) Jerry Seinfeld. And while they briefly had their moments, it all felt way too forced.

… NBCLoved you on Curb Your Enthusiasm this past season, Jerry! Here… not so much.
There was occasionally a bigger and better laugh – yes, the wife of the second couple saying, “People in hell want ice water; they don’t get it,” to her husband’s pleas at wanting a stripper pole installed in their bedroom was pretty good. But of course even that had its impact diminished when it was shown again at the end of the episode.
What is Natalie Morales doing on this show, besides hurting her credibility as a journalist? Looking up random crap on the internet and saying, “The information I’ve found” when talking about losing weight via stripper-influenced exercise is not a job to be proud of. Oh, and look, here’s Marv Albert! Why? Why not?

Seems like a lot of us are experiencing a bit of a let down after the Winter Olympics on NBC. Seems like NBC may be feeling it even more than the viewers. After watching a rousing closing ceremony we stayed tuned for, “The Marriage Ref.”
Let’s face it…when Jerry Seinfeld puts his name on something you pretty much figure it’s going to be a.) good and b.) funny. Well let me let you in on this….there should be a c.) it totally sucked.
Because it did. Suck. A lot. There was a panel with celebrity judges who got to discuss whether it’s okay for a guy to keep his dead stuffed dog in his house and whether a man should be allowed to install a stripper pole in the bedroom he shares with his wife.

NBC News’ Natalie Morales, the “Today” show’s national correspondent and third-hour co-anchor, made her first appearance on NBC’s new “Marriage Ref” last night.
“Marriage Ref” is a new Jerry Seinfeld-produced reality show where a panel of celebrity judges weigh in on a married couple’s disagreements. Morales serves under the title “Just the Facts Ma’am,” where she provides oddball factoid information.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes today, “‘Marriage Ref’ is a cute enough show but is it really necessary to drag the NBC News brand through the mindless entertainment?” Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker writes, “Far from being dismayed that a TV-news person would agree to sit onstage trolling Google for factoids about how using a stripper pole ‘burns 250 calories an hour,’ I applaud Morales for showing both a sense of humor and the simple truth about TV-news readers — i.e., these people aren’t exactly investigative journalists.”

Brooklyn DA: No criminality caught on ACORN video
By SAMANTHA GROSS (AP) – 1 hour ago
NEW YORK — ACORN employees caught on video apparently advising a couple posing as a prostitute and her boyfriend to lie about her profession and launder her earnings did not commit a crime, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said Monday.
The office began its investigation Sept. 15, the day after the video was released online by the conservative activists who posed as an outlaw couple seeking help buying a house. It was but one in a series of such videos filmed at ACORN offices around the country that sparked a national scandal and helped drive the organization to near ruin.
“We are gratified that the district attorney, after a thorough investigation, found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by ACORN,” said a statement by Jean Sassine, a spokeswoman for the organization that has replaced ACORN’s Brooklyn operation.
