Gov. David Paterson made the right decision to end his campaign for a full term as governor, local politicians and business leaders said Friday.
“I think it’s best for the party if Mr. Paterson – Gov. Paterson – steps aside (from the governor’s race) due to the controversies that have developed over the past several weeks,” said Warren County Treasurer Francis O’Keefe, a Democrat.
Paterson became governor in 2008 after former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal.
Now Paterson himself is caught up in controversy over a top aide who stands accused of domestic violence and allegations the State Police may have pressured the aide’s former girlfriend not to press charges.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: NY guv abandons bid for full four-year term

… But I am being realistic about politics,” he said. “It hasn’t been the latest distraction … It’s been an accumulation of obstacles that have obfuscated me from bringing my message to the public.”
Paterson insisted that he would not resign and said he would serve out his term “fighting for the state of New York.”
And he said he would be vindicated by the criminal investigation he called for into his administration’s handling of the abuse case.
Raising his right hand beside his wife, Michelle, he told a crowded press room: “I give you this personal oath. I have never abused my office. Not now, not ever. I believe that when the facts are reviewed, the truth will prevail.”
Paterson became governor in 2008, when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal. His decision to abandon the race paved the way for state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to make an unimpeded run for the Democratic nomination.

Manhattan Escorts: Report: NY Gov. Paterson dropping out of race

Both the New York Post and the New York Daily News are reporting that Paterson has decided to drop out of the race. An official announcement is expected later Friday.
The governor’s decision clears the Democratic primary field for state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who’d been the heavy favorite anyway. It might end up scaring off Republicans too; there was speculation that a primary fight with Paterson would hurt Cuomo with black voters for the general election, but that won’t happen now.
Paterson will reportedly not resign his office. If he did, the job would go to Lt. Gov. Richard Ravitch.
There’s an ironic note to this whole story. Paterson only became governor because he was lieutenant governor when the Times revealed then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s use of an escort service. Now Paterson himself has been taken down by the Times as well.

Manhattan Escorts: Report: Gov. Paterson Drops Election Bid

New York Gov. David Paterson has decided not to run for a full term, a source told the New York Daily News on Friday.
Paterson, a Democrat, scheduled an afternoon news conference. The source said the governor, under fire for getting in touch with a woman who had accused one of his aides of domestic violence, does not plan to resign but will drop his candidacy.
The first black governor of New York, Paterson was lieutenant governor when he replaced Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer resigned in March 2008 after little more than a year in office after a federal investigation into his use of escort services became public.
State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, is also a candidate for governor. The attorney general is investigating Paterson’s alleged contact with Sherr-Una Booker the day before a court hearing.

Manhattan Strip Clubs: Congress’ Health Care Message to Boomers: ‘I Got You, Babe’

That’s no longer the case, unfortunately. The problems with health care are systemic, mostly owing to overregulation, competition for grant monies and poorly thought-out approaches to privacy in a computerized age. None of these can be dealt with by mandating universal insurance coverage, through medical savings accounts or tax breaks.
Indeed, you know something’s amiss when a stripper named Cynthia Hess (a.k.a. “Chesty Love”), of Green Bay, Wisconsin, can win a $2,088 tax deduction for implants that enlarged her bust size to freak show proportions (size 56FF, that’s 10 pounds per bosom, if you need to know). Yet, in Bethesda, Maryland, Karen Tomasow-Richardson, a federal employee with full coverage under the Federal Government Employee insurance program got only $3,000 of an approximately $90,000 bill for a series of operations that included a combination of emergency bone grafts and implants which staved off infection and, in the end, saved her life.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Parking in New York proves a pitfall yet again for Jerry Seinfeld

Elizabeth Clark Zoia, Seinfeld’s spokeswoman, said that his driver became concerned for his safety when they were met by a crowd of fans outside the TV studio so he placed the permit in the car window so he could escort the comedian inside. She said Seinfeld felt that his driver was just trying to help him and so will not be dismissed. She promised that the parking placard would not be used again.
It is not the first time that the comedian has been caught up in difficulties over parking. He once spent $2 million to convert a building in the Upper West Side of Manhattan into a private climate-controlled garage for his collection of 20 Porsches, provoking uproar from neighbours.
In one episode of his show, called The Parking Space, the character George Costanza vows to find a free parking spot instead of paying for a car park. “It’s like going to a prostitute,” George explains to his friend Elaine. “Why should I pay when, if I apply myself, maybe I can get it for free?”

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: NY Gov. Paterson: Time to ’step back’ from election bid

… The issue is going to be whether he will be so damaged, can he lead the state? That’s going to be the big question here,” said state Sen. George Winner, R-Elmira. “I think it’s going to be very difficult for him to be able to govern given this firestorm.”
But others said Paterson will have the burden of a campaign fight against Cuomo off his shoulders and should be able to focus on governing, not politics.
“What it does, it allows those us who have really been deeply concerned about the impact this is having on our ability to do this job, we can now breath and to do exactly that,” said Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson, D-Mount Vernon.
Paterson, the state’s first African-American governor and first legally blind governor, succeeded Eliot Spitzer as governor in March 2008 after Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution sting. A former state senator, he was credited for steadying the state Capitol after it was rocked by the Spitzer scandal.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Paterson drops out, New York’s political nightmare goes on

Paterson drops out as New York’s political nightmare goes on
By Yael T. Abouhalkah, Kansas City Star Editorial Page columnist
The New York losing streak continues. Democratic Gov. David Paterson announced Friday he wouldn’t run for election this fall, two years after he replaced disgraced former Gov. Eliot Spitzer after his involvement in a prostitution scandal.
His decision came barely a week after he had kicked his campaign off.
His downfall is just another reminder for all Americans about how politicians are not above the law. And how their actions and any appearances of impropriety will be judged by an increasingly skeptical public.
The most damning trouble for Paterson included allegations that he reportedly personally intervened in a domestic violence episode involving a top aide.
Paterson said Friday:
“I have never abused my office — not now, not ever…. There are times not to strive for service but to step back. That moment has come for me.”

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Paterson drops out of New York governor race

… Up until the last few days, I was looking forward to participating in that work in a full four-year term,” Paterson said. “But I am being realistic about politics. It hasn’t been the latest distraction, it’s been an accumulation of obstacles that have obfuscated me from bringing my message to the public.
“Therefore, there are times in politics when you have to know not to strive for service but to step back. And that moment has come for me,” he said.
“Today, I am announcing I am ending my campaign for governor of the state of New York,” he said. His wife Michelle stood by his side, eyes red-rimmed and looking weary in a black suit.
A member of a prominent African American political family, he became governor in 2008 when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer was forced out of office by a prostitution scandal. Once a popular state senator, Paterson found himself caught up in the state’s budget crisis and in a variety of personal and political problems.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Paterson Drops Out of Governor Race

Mr. Paterson, his administration caught up in a whirlwind of allegations about its intervention in a domestic violence episode involving a top aide, ended his campaign less than a week after it officially began.
He spoke to more than 60 reporters, photographers and camera men crammed into a small briefing room the governor’s office on Third Avenue in Manhattan
As he prepared for the Friday announcement, some newspaper editorial writers were demanding more than an end to his candidacy: they called for his resignation. That had only added to the increasing sense that it would be nearly impossible for him to run the state and the campaign with the abuse case in the background.
Still, as recently as Thursday evening, Mr. Paterson — who was elected lieutenant governor in November 2006 and became governor in March 2008 after Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal — had insisted that he would stay in the race.
