Manhattan Adult Entertainment: The GOP Argument for Why Passing HCR Through Reconciliation Is Unfair and Mean …

Even better is their attempt to redefine the word “bipartisan” to mean adopting the 100% of the policies of the party that lost the last election. Anything less, they argue, is unilateralism. According to these same folks, invading the wrong country based on cooked-intelligence wasn’t unilateralism. But passing a healthcare bill without the support of lawmakers who have already pledged to never support such a thing, even one that consists mainly of ideas Republicans proposed before it became uncool to do so, is definitely unilateralism.
It’s even unilateraler than that war thing. As a matter of fact, it’s zeroatleral, if there is such a thing.
Democrats are engaged in a dastardly plot to take this bill designed to hold insurance companies accountable and help working families afford good health insurance and ram it down our throats. Ask anyone who works in the adult entertainment industry inside the Beltway. Republicans know a thing or two about nonconsensual throat-ramming.

Manhattan Strip Clubs: Another Door Closes in Bell Case

Another Door Closes in Bell Case
It could not have been an easy decision. Nearly two years after Sean Bell died in a hail of bullets in the early hours of the morning outside a seedy strip club in southeast Queens, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has decided that there is insufficient evidence to charge the police with civil rights violations.
Bell died hours before he was to marry Nicole Paultre-Bell. Two of his friends, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, were also shot but survived. No doubt they are disappointed by the decision. Led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, they had hoped a federal prosecution based on a violation of Bell’s civil rights would bring them the justice they have been waiting for.
The community was already stunned when three of the five officers were acquitted in a bench trial April 25, 2008. The officers involved in the shooting still face administrative charges, but that will be little consolation for Paultre-Belle, Guzman and Benefield.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: New York governor weighs his campaign amid scandal

Denise O’Donnell, deputy secretary for Public Safety, said in her resignation statement that contacts by the governor and state police with a woman seeking a protective order against Paterson aide David Johnson were “unacceptable regardless of their intent.”
The unidentified woman seeking the protective order accused Johnson of violent assault last fall, the New York Times reported on Thursday.
The woman said state police harassed her to drop her case, and police confirmed a member of the governor’s personal security team visited her, the Times said.
Paterson telephoned her before a court hearing earlier this month. After the call, she failed to appear and her case was dismissed, the Times said.
Paterson was already fighting for his political life before this latest report. With low approval ratings, he has resisted calls from fellow Democrats to drop his re-election bid in November. He took office two years ago when former Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal.

N.Y. Gov. Paterson says he won’t step aside
The Democrat says he’ll continue his election campaign for now, despite a growing scandal involving domestic-violence allegations against a key aide.
New York – Despite calls from leading Democrats to step aside, Gov. David Paterson said Thursday that he would not drop his election bid amid a growing scandal surrounding accusations of domestic violence against a key aide.
The embattled governor said he would speak to key New York Democrats about his political future, but for now he was continuing his campaign. Paterson became governor in 2008, when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal.
Paterson also said he would cooperate fully with a state attorney general’s investigation into contact his administration had with a woman who accused aide David Johnson of domestic violence. No criminal charges were brought after the Halloween 2009 confrontation.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Furor grows over Paterson’s potential role in aide’s domestic violence case

If Paterson “did anything that even borders on inappropriate, I think we need to seriously consider whether he can continue” in office, said Assemblyman Joseph Morelle, who heads the Monroe County Democratic Committee and is a Cuomo ally.
In a radio interview Thursday morning, a subdued Paterson declined to say much about the case after weeks of vehemently denying rumors about his personal life and defending Johnson.
“I asked the attorney general to get to the bottom of this and let the chips fall where they may,” Paterson said on WOR-AM (710) in New York City.
The scandal is the latest troubling situation for Paterson, who has struggled with record-low approval ratings and questions about his leadership. He was elected lieutenant governor in 2006 and succeeded Eliot Spitzer as governor in March 2008 when Spitzer resigned amid revelations he was involved with a prostitution ring.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Court Records Detail NY Gov Aide’s Domestic Case

Booker, 40, abandoned her case against Johnson after receiving a telephone call from Paterson, The New York Times reported.
Paterson’s office acknowledges he talked to the woman but says she placed the call, and a spokesman for the governor has denied anyone tried to keep the woman from pursuing a domestic-violence case. State police say they won’t comment on the case while it’s being investigated by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who’s widely believed to be considering a bid for the governor’s office in November.
Paterson, who rose to governor in 2008 after former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal, says he did nothing wrong and will run for a full four-year term despite calls from fellow Democrats for him to step aside. He has suspended Johnson without pay and hasn’t made Johnson available to comment or answer questions.

Manhattan Adult Entertainment: Destito calls Paterson allegations ‘horrifying’

Paterson has suspended Johnson without pay and has asked Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a potential Paterson rival for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, to investigate.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio, however, questioned if Cuomo could do so independently, since he could have a vested interest in the outcome.
Griffo was asked about whether a conflict would exist in a Cuomo investigation of Paterson.
“It would be nice if you had a system where you could appoint a special prosecutor who would be able to address it quickly, but if not, it is what it is,” Griffo said.
Paterson said Thursday he won’t drop his election bid amid the growing scandal. The governor said he would speak to key New York Democrats about his political future but for now he’s continuing his campaign to be elected governor. Paterson rose to governor in 2008, when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in a prostitution scandal.
