(February 20, 2010) – Five New York City Police officers will not face civil rights charges in the 2006 shooting death of Sean Bell, the U.S. Justice Department announced February 16.
Bell, 23, was shot leaving his bachelor party at a strip club in the early morning hours of November 25, 2006, his wedding day.
A review of the case by the FBI, Justice Department officials, and the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York did not find sufficient evidence that the officers had willfully acted to deny Bell and two friends their constitutional rights, the department said in a statement.

Golf’s biggest star spoke before a friendly crowd of 40 people in Florida, most of whom he had not seen since the Nov. 27 car accident that exposed the dirty side of a squeaky-clean image with sordid tales of sex.
Supporters thought his televised apology for cheating on his wife and letting his fans down was sincere. Critics found it to be scripted.
Either way, it was clear just how differently Woods is viewed now.
Another example: Two employees from a local strip club were chased off the property Friday morning at the Sawgrass Marriott, where dozens of satellite trucks and some 300 media gathered to watch Woods’ appearance on short-circuit TV. And about an hour before Woods was to speak, a pair of women not dressed for the chilly weather stood along the side of the road holding signs with suggestive comments.

… I’m kicking off my campaign in Hempstead because this is where my family moved when my parents were searching for a mainstream school that would welcome a child who was blind,” said the Governor. “It was in Hempstead that I learned to believe in myself and to never give up, no matter how many times someone would tell me that I couldn’t do something.”
Paterson delivered what his aides called a “people first” message.
“This election isn’t about me. This election is about you – the people of New York and I will never stop putting the people first,” Paterson said.
Paterson became governor in March 2008 after Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal. While Paterson enjoyed strong support early on in his administration, his poll numbers in the past year have dropped to historic lows and he’s struggled recently to quell unsubstantiated rumors about her personal life. During his speech, he admitted he’s had a “difficult past few weeks.”

In fact, late-night television may be the listening post most Americans rely on for making sense of these things. But the underlying problem represented by America’s inadequate apologizers runs pretty deep, said the Rev. Gary Dorrien, a professor of social ethics at Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan.
“Public trust is built on an assumption that public officials, and respected public figures, can be believed — that you can trust that they are who they say they are,” he said.
When public figures are revealed to be other than who they claimed — and follow up with apologies that betray them as having immature personalities, unfamiliar with the rigors of honest self-assessment — the fabric of social trust suffers, he said.
It’s not as if the whole thing suddenly tears in two because an Eliot Spitzer gets caught in a prostitution sting, resigns as governor of New York, and apologizes — but never mentions or admits that he broke the law.

Paterson has attributed his poor showing in the polls to budget deficits that forced him to advocate unpopular spending cuts in education and health care. New York’s jobless rate reached 9 percent in December, 0.4 percentage point more than in November, the state labor department said last month.
‘Eternal Optimist’
The governor, who referred to himself as “an eternal optimist” in his speech today challenged people to “judge me on what I’ve done,” and promised to continue to “stand up for the people” of his state.
“After going through a year when we had the highest escalation of a budget deficit ever visited by a state in the history of this country,” Paterson said, “we were tested in ways we never thought we’d be. But we didn’t give up.”
Paterson, who served as lieutenant governor under Spitzer, has never won a statewide election. He assumed the governor’s job after Spitzer was caught patronizing prostitutes.

In one extraordinarily bitter rebuttal, Paterson, 55, said the “bashing” sought to portray him as “racialized, hypersexualized and more or less dissolute.”
“It appears that all I’m doing is drinking, chasing women, doing drugs,” he said.
Paterson heads to the upstate town of Rochester on Saturday for his opening election campaign event and the main buzz is not about what he’ll say, but how many people will bother showing up.
According to the Daily News, another event in the mostly African American New York neighborhood of Harlem was delayed amid “disarray” in the campaign.
Clearly many of Paterson’s problems are not his fault.
He only became state governor by accident in March 2008 when the elected governor, Eliot Spitzer, resigned in a prostitution scandal and Paterson, as lieutenant governor, automatically filled the spot.

Paterson talked about how he has been an underdog his whole life, with people consistently telling him that he could not succeed because of his disability. But he said he has never backed down from a challenge.
Last fall, the White House asked Paterson to reconsider his election plans and most Democratic leaders have not rallied around his candidacy. No major statewide party leaders—including Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, who Paterson appointed in January—were joining him on the tour. The Associated Press estimated about 400 people attended this morning’s event.
“So many people are saying I shouldn’t run for governor. But you need to know that this is a governor that does not quit,” Paterson said, with his wife, Michelle, at his side.
Paterson’s popularity among voters soared after he took office, and he was credited with steadying the state Capitol after Spitzer’s stunning resignation due to his solicitation of a prostitute.

Tiger Woods’ Mistresses Left Out Of His Apology!
While it seemed like golf superstar Tiger Woods included everyone under the sun in his apology yesterday, some notables say they were left out. Like Playboy model and alleged call girl Loredana Jolie Ferriolo, who told the Post, “He didn’t mention anything about the girls [he had trysts with]. It seems like he was just brushing it off and not getting into it. I think he should’ve mentioned something in regards to the girls — an apology or something.” Yeah, that would have gone over well with Elin!
One of them, porn star Veronica Siwik-Daniels told reporters, “He’s so selfish. It’s not about anybody but him. [His apology] doesn’t feel like it was real,” as, the Daily News reports, she “[wiped] tears from her false eyelashes.” Siwik-Daniels, who claims that Woods made her give up her porn career (as Joslyn James) and that she became pregnant twice during their relationship, also told the News, “He needs therapy. I’m just not sure what kind of therapy that is.”

Substitute teacher charged with prostitution By John Nickerson, Staff Writer Published: 10:14 p.m., Friday, February 19, 2010
NORWALK — A Greenwich substitute teacher was arrested on charges of propositioning two police detectives for sex in South Norwalk Thursday night.
Barbara Glynn, 50, of 15 Ridgecrest Road, Stamford, was charged with prostitution and held overnight in lieu of $1,500 bond.
At her arraignment Friday afternoon at state Superior Court in Norwalk, Judge Bruce Hudock released Glynn on a written promise to appear in court and forbade her from working with school children while the case is before the court.
Following her release, Glynn said she has been a substitute teacher in Greenwich for the past year.
Greenwich school officials said Glynn has worked as a substitute on and off since August 2008. Most recently she subbed for two days in last fall.
