Sean Bell, in case the name does not. . . er — ring a bell, was a 23-year-old black male killed by New York City police in a proverbial hail of bullets early on the morning of Nov. 25, 2006. A number of facts in the case are immutable:
FACT: Bell in his short life was arrested three times, twice for drug dealing and once for a firearms possession.
FACT: The men Bell was in the company of the night he was killed, Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield, had themselves been arrested nine and three times, respectively. Each had been arrested at least once for illegal firearm possession. Guzman had been previously arrested for armed robbery and had served two separate terms in a state prison. Benefield had a sealed record as a juvenile for gun possession and robbery.
FACT: The Queens nightclub Bell and his friends were frequenting the night of the shooting was under investigation by police, who were there in plain clothes, responding to reports of a prostitution ring.

Who could blame him? From genteel beginnings in the late 1820s, when the sole inn on the island attracted visitors like Walt Whitman – who ‘declaimed Homer and Shakespeare to the surf and sea gulls by the hour’ – had emerged a thrilling whirligig of a place.
By the 1900s, 90,000 people visited during the summer; in 1909 it was more like 20 million. Accessible by steamer, and later by subway, it was New York’s summertime hub.
There, on the two-mile stretch of beach that made up Coney Island, were crammed the archetypes of American life. There were families running respectable businesses, pleasant little bathing pavilions and snack stands.
There were gangsters, too, toughs running prostitutes and gambling rings and illegal boxing matches. Con men and petty thieves trawled the piers and beach front for easy marks.

A day after federal investigators announced that there is “insufficient evidence” to pursue a civil rights case against the officers who shot and killed Sean Bell, relatives of the 23-year-old said they are after the officers’ badges. “Myself and my family are going to do everything possible to see that these police officers are fired,” said Bell’s fiancee, Nicole Paultre-Bell. “There is a history of black men being killed by police officers, and something needs to be done … We’re hoping to eventually meet with President Obama, and that he’ll do something, because this is a national problem.”
Following the acquittal of three officers involved in the 50-shot barrage that claimed Bell’s life outside a Queens strip club on the day of his wedding, the victim’s friends and family pushed for a federal civil rights trial. But according to Bell’s father, William, prosecutors felt they “were limited by statutes and evidence.” He told the Daily News: “My son’s dead, and they can’t do anything about it. He can’t even rest in peace.”

Yesterday, Satran launched “Ho Springs” online, in blog format, with the most recent chapter on top, and sections for special characters (written by other local writers, including me) to give their read on events.
The story starts here with the protagonist, Cora, returning to her hometown of Hot Springs after years of living in Paris. Some of the secondary characters include Taryn Piper Forrest, a stripper and meth addict, whose little black book is written by Montclair novelist Benilde Little. Cora’s daughter Juliette, keeps a secret diary, written by creative writing student Danielle Miksza. Susan Sherrill Axelrod, a Montclair food writer, provides recipes and other behind-the-scenes notes from Cora’s Kitchen. And I am the town tarot reader, Jimmie Sue Fallon, who reads the cards here. Graphic designer Katie Mancine created the neon-sign design of the site.

News Hub: Republicans Retaking Center Stage?
The retirement announcement of Sen. Evan Bayh (D., Ind.) is raising the question of whether the Republicans are poised to retake control. WSJ’s Naftali Bendavid joins Simon Constable in the News Hub with more.
Can’t argue with that. But it’s obvious that the half-hearted efforts of a middle-of-the-road, waffling legislator like Bayh are not going to solve the problem, so the Senate will be better off without him.
What we don’t need in a broken Senate is veterans who think it can and should be restored to its putative pristine glory. Those who, like Bayh, hanker for the days of the old gentleman’s club where reason and collegiality prevailed are not much help in today’s environment. That Senate, if it ever did exist, is truly gone with the wind.

… Multiple sources say Paterson has conveyed to associates that the disgraced ex-governor – who stepped down from his office in 2008 amid a high-priced call girl scandal – has been advising him informally on how to rescue his flailing administration as he faces the looming Andrew Cuomo primary juggernaut.

… David Johnson’s growth as a political professional has surprised even his greatest advocates, and I am proud that he has demonstrated what someone can accomplish when given a second chance,” stated Paterson.
Paterson also challenged the paper’s allegation that Johnson has been involved in three separate fights with women, two of which the governor was aware of but considered them relationship disputes.
“There is no independent evidence presented that would substantiate any claims of violence committed by David Johnson against a woman,” he said.
The New York Times published the article on Tuesday after weeks of speculation that the paper was working on an exposé piece that might cause the embittered governor to resign.
Paterson’s latest approval rating has fallen to 26 percent from 30 percent, according to a poll by Marist College. He became New York State Governor in 2008 when Eliot Spitzer resigned after his affair with prostitutes came to light.

Paterson and His Aide.
For a while now, there’s been a rumor percolating that the New York Times had been sitting on a blockbuster story about New York Gov. David Paterson that might even force him out of office, much as his predecessor Eliot Spitzer was when the Times revealed his predilection for prostitutes.
Now that the piece is here, it looks like a whole lot of hype. The story focuses on the “rapid rise” of Paterson aide David W. Johnson, who has a couple of felony drug arrests as a teenager. In one circumstance, Johnson pleaded to a lesser charge and was given probation. He has apparently been involved in two altercations with former girlfriends, the second of which the Times suggests may have turned violent. If Johnson did abuse his girlfriend, that’s absolutely unacceptable. But as everyone involved has refused to comment, it’s difficult to know what actually happened.

Former McKesson HBOC Chairman Charles McCall will remain free until his formal sentencing date, The Recorder has reported, despite requests from prosecutors to jail him immediately for failing to disclose an arrest for soliciting prostitution to court officials. A federal judge this week determined that McCall posed no flight risk, The Recorder explained, since he has made all of his scheduled court appearances since he was originally indicted on securities fraud charges in 2003. However, The Recorder added, the judge did raise McCall’s bail and ordered him to stay off his boat – which can reportedly make it to the Bahamas “on a clear day” – while he awaits formal sentencing for his crimes. more…
Government prosecutors are seeking to jail former McKesson HBOC Chairman Charles McCall ahead of his formal sentencing date for securities fraud, The Recorder has reported. Convicted on multiple counts of securities fraud last month, The Recorder noted, McCall was originally scheduled to be sentenced for his crimes sometime next year. But government aut …
