The bonuses, he concedes with a smile, have
nothing to do with his skill as a high school
teacher. Over the years, whenever workers
would strike, they would in some cases get a
bonus, he said, as he sat in a local union
office here.
For decades, both conservative and socialist
governments in Greece have rewarded the
demands of public sector unions with higher
pay and more jobs.
In 2009, striking farmers were paid 400
million euros by the government and this
year they are back again, having briefly
closed Greeces border with Bulgaria.
Protesting dockworkers extracted big payouts
from the government in November. And the
countrys tax collectors went on strike on
Thursday even though their services are needed
more than ever.
Striking is a bit of a national sport in
Greece. Last month, the countrys unionized
prostitutes took to the streets, protesting
unlicensed competition from Russian and
Eastern European immigrants.

… The governor started making calls two weeks ago to step up his campaign effort and get ready to officially announce his re-election campaign,” Fife said. “The calls were — and are — going well … And then look what happens — a coordinated effort to stop him and spread rumors.”
A Democrat close to the situation, though, said the meetings included discussions about whether Paterson would resign or announce he will not run because of the unsubstantiated claims in the whisper campaign surrounding the governor’s behavior. The Democrat spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Paterson became governor 23 months ago when Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal. Paterson had been forced to confront allegations of sexual affairs and drug use since the day he rose to office on March 17, 2008. He held an extraordinary news conference detailing past affairs that he and his wife were involved in during an 18-month period when it appeared their marriage would end. He also recounted drug use from his youth.

Former sex worker Kristin Davis, dubbed the “Manhattan Madam,” said she intends to run as a Libertarian in the race for governor of New York.
Davis has help from a well known Republican operative, Roger Stone, who worked with former presidents including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and both Bushes.
Davis has talked about running against forwwmer Gov. (and alleged former client) Eliot Spitzer.
In 2007, Stone tipped off the FBI to Spitzer’s predilection for prostitutes, landing Davis nearly four months on Rikers Island while Spitzer resigned in disgrace but escaped indictment, the Daily News said.
Davis’ image belies her credentials, which include 10 years in finance, the report said. She says she is a natural Libertarian, defining “taxation as confiscation,” and says legalizing prostitution and marijuana could provide $2.5 billion in revenue.

NY Governor is not resigning: spokeswoman
NEW YORK (Reuters) – New York Democratic Governor David Paterson is not planning to resign, his spokeswoman said on Monday, calling blog reports “entirely fabricated.”
“This is a new low even by the standards of planet Albany. The circus of the past week — entirely fabricated out of thin air and innuendo — is an embarrassment for all who have played a role in fueling it,” Marissa Shorenstein said by e-mail.
Paterson, a former legislator and lieutenant governor, became governor in 2008 after former Governor Eliot Spitzer, also a Democrat, resigned amid a prostitution scandal.
Since last week, media blogs, including the Huffington Post, have said the New York Times was on the brink of publishing a story so scandalous that Paterson would have resign.

Howard Stern to Replace Simon Cowell on American Idol?
Feb 08, 2010
You’re going to be hard pressed to find a new judge for American Idol who’s more of an obnoxious d-bag than Simon Cowell, but Fox producers have a candidate at the top of their lists: Howard Stern.
Stern may shift gears from the blah-blah-blah he does every morning with strippers and mutants on his satellite radio program to sitting at the American Idol judges’ table, according to The New York Post. Stern is tapped as the leading candidate to replace the acerbic Cowell, who’s set to retire from the show at the end of this season.

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 2/8/2010New Orleans explodes with joy after Saints winEcstatic fans poured into the streets of the French Quarter late Sunday as storm-scarred New Orleans celebrated its first-ever Super Bowl win by their beloved Saints.
A city famous for diversions – Mardi Gras, music and colorful politics, to name a few – set aside distractions to focus on the big game.
Even the strippers on bawdy Bourbon Street stopped dancing. Instead, they joined thousands of revelers cheering the Saints on live television sets at nearby bars.
“We have no music, no stages. It’s the first time I’ve seen a club shut down and I’ve been doing this for five years,” said Sam Stonebraker, 34, a host at Rick’s Cabaret.
“The game is pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime event in this city.”

And British guerilla graffiti artist Banksy “anonymously” opened his debut feature film, Exit through the Gift Shop. Not listed in the festival program, it was advertised only via word-of-mouth and on a dozen mysterious pictures sprayed on buildings and utility boxes in Salt Lake City and Park City by the artist. Nonetheless, every screening was sold out. The film calls itself “the world’s first street art disaster movie”, is narrated by Welshman Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill), and concerns the relationship between the unseen, vocally disguised Banksy and a French immigrant filmmaker in LA.
Far less original was Welcome to the Rileys, directed by Jake Scott and produced by his illustrious father Ridley and uncle Tony. Jake managed to pull in some stars, notably James Gandolfini (aka Tony Soprano) and Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan in Twilight).
But the resulting picture fell flat, with interminable scenes of Gandolfini weeping unconvincingly as his teenage daughter and mistress die in quick succession, preposterously propelling him to seek solace in an affair with an underage stripper.

On a typical night, the club has 40 “entertainers” dancing on stage – not tonight.
A few doors down, the Temptations strip club was also upstaged by the Saints Super Bowl.

CHANNING Tatum says he grew up wanting to be an action hero.
The G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra actor — who stars opposite Amanda Seyfried in the new romantic drama/war film Dear John — says despite his childhood ambitions, becoming a romantic leading man is just as good as fighting the bad guys.
“When you’re growing up, you imagine yourself being an action hero who’s running around shooting guns and jumping from buildings,” he said.
“I’ve done that, but I knew I could handle a movie about first love. In real life I have probably been as equally versed in romance as physical stuff.”
Tatum — who worked as an exotic dancer as a teenager before he broke into acting — recently revealed he’s planning to make a movie about strippers.
