On This Day in History: February 2Brooklynites Want Their Booze on Sundayby Phoebe Neidl (phoebe@brooklyneagle.net), published online 02-02-2010
On Feb. 2, 1902 a front-page story in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that âThree of Each Four Voters Favors Sunday Saloons.â Six years earlier, in 1896, New York State passed the Raines Law, which prohibited the sale of alcohol on Sundays, except in hotels. This prompted many saloons to throw together some rooms for rent above their bars, which in turn was believed to increase prostitution. Below is an excerpt of the Eagleâs Feb. 2 story:
âIf the results of a careful canvas are a correct indication of the views of the voting population of Brooklyn, a large, indeed a dominating majority in this borough favor Sunday opening of the saloons and legislation to that end.

New York Post Reporter Hits Cover With Undercover Male Prostitute Story
…
Although Stadtmiller insists she didn’t have sex with Markus, she did get naked and let him inspect her — paying $500 for the privilege. Throughout her two-hour session, she learns some facts about the prostitute, but it’s by no means ground-breaking journalism. In fact, Stadtmiller seems more intent on making fun of Markus’ mispronunciations than actually getting to the bottom of his reasons for selling his body, which is exactly what we expect from a piece like in this the Post. It’s funny, light and all around ridiculous.
The piece is not so much about Markus and his new job, or the social implications of a legal male prostitute, but how far Stadtmiller was willing to go to get the scoop. But in the end, it seems like she may have learned something:
“Markus has taught me so much. About what a gigolo should never, ever, ever do. ‘Women don’t want sex so much as companionship,’ he concludes. ‘Women can be a prostitute. But not men.’

The New York Post hired the country’s most famous call girl, Ashley Dupre, and now it’s shelled out for America’s first legal male prostitute.
Post reporter Mandy Stadtmiller paid $500 for two hours with “Markus” for an article that made Tuesday’s cover.
“Who would hire the first legal male hooker in the country?” Stadtmiller asks in the lede. “A desperate spinster? A lonely divorcee? A New York Post reporter on undercover assignment Answer: All of the above.”
Stadtmiller traveled to Las Vegas to get naked with “Markus,” but they did not have sex:
Minutes later, as we’re standing naked in the shower, he’s examining me like a second-rate gynecologist and nodding. “Yeah,” he murmurs, cooing that I’m “practically” an 8 or a 9. “Everything looks great down there.” Oh. My. God.

… Up until I started my cooperation (with the FBI) I would operate – I would lie, I would steal, I would cheat,” Dwek said in response to questions from Neary.
“I would do whatever I thought was necessary to further my real-estate business. Once I decided to cooperate (with the government), and I signed a cooperating agreement, I did not lie, cheat, steal. I obeyed,” he added.
Dwek was referring to a line Beldini used in one of many recordings Dwek made for the FBI in which she quotes a motto of Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy: “Don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal.”
Dwek acknowledged swindling friends, family and members of his Jewish community in Deal, dishonoring his father, a rabbi.
He said he was in a partnership that ran a gambling boat and the boat was used for prostitution. Neary suggested this made Dwek guilty of helping others covet their neighbors’ wives.

Susan: Aw, she’s a mentor to an ex-stripper, isn’t that cute? Not only does Susan get her a job (that she eventually has to leave), but she aslo makes her MJ’s babysitter. Um, a little weird, seeing as how she was freaking out over Mike going to the strip club and now she brings the strip club home to him, ha ha.
Angie: Apparently Angie’s been sipping on some of the crazy juice that sent Katherine to the hospital. I mean, really; first she doesn’t care about Danny and Anna (after getting all persnickety about Anna last week), then she bursts into Gaby and Carlos’s house to stop Carlos from attacking Danny, then she goes after the non-environmentally friendly neighbor. This in itself is a big development, because it finally gives us a little more in to Angie’s past and that they were some sort of environmentalist guerillas? terrorists? tree huggers? I was sort of hoping for some mafia connection, but I guess that would be to …

It pains me to be nice enough to give her a C because I think Miley Cyrus is a total skank. But she didn’t look too skanky last night. This dress is tasteful with the long sleeves. She’s showing leg but she’s not showing boob and everything else. I think the color isn’t the greatest on her. I feel like it’s overpowering, like it’s swallowing her up. And boy would that headline make my day! “Miley Cyrus Eaten by Dress.”
Melody Thornton [Pussycat Dolls]: Grade B
I’m not really sure who this chick is so I Wikipedia’s her and found out she’s a Pussycat Doll. (Were they nominated for ANYTHING?) Whoever she is she looked good. I like this dress on her, it fits her well. The silver contrasts well with her skin tone. I love the up-do and even her bag and jewelry went well with the whole look. I think she should break free from her current job as a singing stripper and go more main stream.

Love it or hate it, ‘Catcher’ lives on
I remember reading “The Catcher in the Rye” as a high school sophomore, and at that time, it was the most shocking book I’d ever read. It’s funny thinking back to how innocent I was four years ago; I even remember closing the book when I got to the part when Holden Caulfield hires a prostitute, thinking, “OMG! Are we seriously even allowed to read this?”
Even though the racier bits of “The Catcher in the Rye” are nothing compared to the material in some books I’ve read since, and it has long ceased to be among my favorite books, it’s hard to deny the book’s power to resonate with teenagers experiencing all the pitfalls of growing up. For me, it really helped define what being an angst-filled teenager was about. I even loved how nonchalantly my classmates seemed to react to the book (many downright dismissed it as nonsense); but I knew some of them, like me, were secretly fascinated by it.
