NY governor’s troopers again linked to controversy
Associated Press – February 28, 2010 10:25 AM ET
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – The state troopers surrounding New York’s governor are again at the center of controversy rocking an administration in Albany.
The latest claims of political misuse of troopers has already prompted the resignation of a Cabinet member in charge of public safety and may yet snare the governor.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is investigating whether State Police improperly influenced a woman who accused 1 of the governor’s key aides of domestic abuse.
Two years ago, the governor’s detail was investigated after Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s contact with a prostitute at a Washington hotel, which led to Spitzer’s resignation. State police were also probed in claims the Spitzer administration used them to track political enemies.

Raising his right hand beside his wife, Michelle, he told a crowded press room: “I give you this personal oath. I have never abused my office. Not now, not ever. I believe that when the facts are reviewed, the truth will prevail.”
While politicians from both parties wouldn’t say the Governor should resign because of the scandal, tabloids called for his ousting.
“Time to go, Dave,” the New York Post said in its headline. The New York Daily News said Paterson had demeaned his high office and was not trustworthy.
Paterson insisted he would not resign and pledged to serve out his term fighting for the state of New York.
Paterson took office amid the prostitution scandal that ended fellow Democrat Eliot Spitzer’s term, defiantly introducing himself to legislators at his swearing in, declaring: “I am David Paterson and I am the Governor of New York!”

The police warning was as straight-forward as they come. If director Antoine Fuqua and the crew of “Brooklyn’s Finest” insisted on filming in Brownsville, Brooklyn, they would be on their own. The neighborhood, just east of Crown Heights, is among the city’s most crime-ridden: gang members reportedly control the streets, prostitutes work the corners, drug dealers infest the housing projects.
The neighborhood is so violent that a few years ago, the military created a training program at the local hospital because its emergency room most closely resembled that of a war zone. About half of the patients had either been stabbed or shot.
But Fuqua, who also made the Oscar-winning “Training Day,” wanted an authenticity for his police drama that could only be found in the Van Dyke projects, the run-down collection of public housing units that spawned Mike Tyson and members of the Wu-Tang Clan. So in the summer of 2008, Hollywood came to Brownsville — for what was among the first, and quite possibly one of the last, times.

WASHINGTON: David Paterson, New York state’s first black governor, will end his term as it began: with a scandal.
Mr Paterson took office two years ago when his predecessor, Eliot Spitzer, resigned after it was revealed he had met a prostitute in a Washington hotel.
Mr Paterson, who is legally blind, opened his term with a news conference admitting his own marital infidelity. His reputation never recovered.
Now he says he will not seek re-election in November, succumbing to pressure from top Democrats to withdraw amid revelations his administration had intervened in a domestic violence case against one of his aides.
He is widely seen as ineffective, his legislative agenda stalled in the state legislature. In May, a poll showed a majority of New Yorkers would prefer to have Mr Spitzer back despite his sexual misdemeanours.

… What does it say, that it’s all right for oral sex in public?” said Brian Woods, a Newark resident. “That’s not the message we want to send to our young people.”
Woods, like many people walking downtown, thought the ad should come down.
Some others thought it isn’t that bad, that it’s no different than what you see in New York. Besides, sex sells, right? That didn’t wash with Yolanda Anderson and Robert Burton of Newark. They were waiting for the bus at the corner of Washington and University avenues when I brought the billboard to their attention. “Her head shouldn’t be there,” Anderson said. “C’mon, this is the beginning of the downtown area,” Burton added. “That looks like something you see advertised in a strip club.’’ As for what should happen now, only one thing comes to mind: The billboard gets the hook, right along with the two numbskulls in it. Okay, that’s two things.

Is Cuomo fated to be like Spitzer?
Gov. david paterson’s decision to abandon his election campaign comes as a relief to the vast majority of New Yorkers, who believe that he has failed at leading the state in almost every possible way. An unfortunate consequence of his tenure may be that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo could waltz into the governor’s mansion next year having made no clear commitments on the important issues facing the statea
potential repeat of the disastrous Spitzer era.
Here’s the history lesson we should not forget: Eliot Spitzer may have lost the governorship and his reputation as a result of his visits with prostitutes, but he lost his effectiveness as a leaderlong before he actually left powerbecause of his commanding victories in the primary and the general election.

Say this for New York Gov.-For-Now David Paterson: He can take a hint. Provided that hint is delivered over and over again by public opinion polls, political colleagues and high-ranking members of his own party.
The door to the governor’s mansion was opened for Paterson by scandal. It has likewise been closed, in part, by scandal. And of that door, many New Yorkers are thinking, “don’t let it hit you on the way out, Dave.”
The poor governor has had a difficult two years in office.
His political fortunes rose when his predecessor’s trousers fell. Former Gov. Eliot “Leave off the last ‘T’ for Tawdry” Spitzer resigned in disgrace in March 2008 amid a prostitution scandal. (And check out this career arc: The woman involved is now a newspaper columnist.)

His reputation went from ineffective to possibly sinister after reports surfaced that the State Police and Paterson himself might have interfered with a woman who was allegedly beaten by a top gubernatorial aide in a domestic violence incident.
The weight of it all seemed too heavy for Paterson, who announced Friday he would not run for a full four-year term, though he denied doing anything improper.
“It’s a sad personal story,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “He came in with the best good will. Everybody liked him.”
Paterson took over as governor in March 2008 amid a groundswell of support from voters and lawmakers. Both groups were eager to put steamrolling Eliot Spitzer, and the prostitution scandal that brought his term as governor to an abrupt end, behind them.

Bankhead, who conceded that she was not an ace student and had particular “trouble with algebra,” told The New York Times in a 1951 interview: “My father said if you know your Shakespeare and Bible and can shoot craps, you’ve got a liberal education.”
Bankhead joined the repertoire company at the Lyceum Theater in Baltimore in 1922, and the next year left for England, where she became a national sensation in a number of plays such as “The Green Hat,” “Fallen Angels,” “The Gold Diggers,” and “They Knew What They Wanted” before heading to Hollywood to make pictures in 1931.
Bankhead, whose film career was less than stellar until 1944, when she appeared as a foreign correspondent in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Lifeboat,” returned to the stage, gaining fame playing the prostitute Sabrina in Thornton Wilder’s “The Skin of Our Teeth,” Regina in Lillian Hellman’s “The Little Foxes” and appearing in the 1948 revival on Broadway of Noel Coward’s “Private Lives.”

A six-day campaign
Posted: February 28, 2010 – 2:00 AM
Last Sunday, David Paterson announced his intention to run for a full, four-year term as governor of New York. He told crowds in appearances across the state that he would not allow rumors about his personal life keep him from seeking the office he inherited when Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in 2008 after becoming entangled in a sex scandal involving prostitutes.
Tempus fugits quickly sometimes in politics. A week after his entry into the race, Paterson was being urged by fellow Democrats to drop out because of concerns involving the personal life of one of his top aides. The concerns are legitimate and, unlike rumors or disenchantment with his performance in office, were enough to end Paterson’s hopes of achieving by voter choice what he gained by accident. He ended his campaign Friday.
